I would love to hear your comments or receive your email and I promise you I will reply. It means something to me that you make time to read my blog.
By day, I am a research and evaluation consultant to nonprofit arts organizations throughout the United States. I also work as a freelance writer, preparing articles that highlight the work of emerging artists and broader issues of importance within the creative community.
Some kind of creative experience should be part of your world every day. Art, music, writing and other kinds of performance can enhance our understanding of the people, places and things we encounter.
Creative expression allows us to share thoughts not easily communicated in more traditional methods, to process the complex leanings of private, inner thoughts for our own use, or simply to explore and play with ideas and materials that catch the eye.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of people give up on art in elementary school when they determine that they "can't" draw. But here is the secret: Natural Drawing Ability is Not Important. Neither is an arts education, or any kind of education for that matter.
Only a very small percentage of working artists have a natural drawing ability. The rest of us can acquire the technical skill of drawing if we decide to put the time in. Otherwise, it's just a matter of finding the media that you will enjoy working with.
And you don't need any special schooling to get into this community. If you've got some ideas, you've got everything you need. Everything else can be learned from a book, a workshop, or simple elbow grease.
And if you're lost, creatively speaking, I can help. Email me for ideas, websites, creative exercises, and projects. I'd love to hear from you!
Heidi
My personal blog, www.twokitties.typepad.com, is a kind of reflection on finds that relate to my own creative work. I spend time on books, film, creative writing, visual art and contemporary and traditional fiber art. Environmental art and large-scale, outdoor installations similar to work by Andy Goldworthy, James Turrell and Alfredo Jaar also interest me. Email from readers, artists and ideas for future posts are very welcome!
