Most are contested as inappropriate subject matter for young people. Many old favorites are [still] on that list. The bigger, the better? The tighter the sweater? Yes. It's on there. The boys are depending on us! Almost everything by Judy Blume.
Newer books, like Carolyn Mackler's "The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things" start a conversation about uncomfortable topics - like the Our Parents Don't Always Know What's Best For Us topic.
I haven't read Mackler's book, but I will. It's my first amendment right, and an activity suggested by the American Library Association as a way to support Banned Books Week. The Kids Right to Read Project also has information and ideas about ways to support books and libraries in the community.
