This mixed-media encaustic collage piece is the first to incorporate some of the grave rubbings I've been collecting. The rubbing was done on silk with wax crayon. It is the cream-colored scroll work that runs across the top of the board.
I like the rubbing, but I'm still trying to decide how I feel about this piece. It's too early to tell, really. It still needs to be waxed, and the wax will make all of the layers take on a level of transparency. You'll be able to see handwriting underneath the lighter areas after waxing, and the intensity of the paint and pastel work should pull back a little bit. On top of the wax, I plan to embed some gold leaf detail.
I definitely worked this piece more than I usually do, the question is whether or not it will wind up being too much.
I like it so far!
