So, my "celebratory" 5K was on Saturday. The one I chose to mark the successful completion of my Jeff Galloway 'Ultimate 5K' ipod training program. My sister was visiting so I made her register, too. I am up to 6 miles, so I was feeling good about the race. I was actually looking forward to it.
And then I got food poisoning, possibly the flu, after having dinner out on Thursday night. It doesn't matter what it was, I just know it will be a long, long, long, time before I can stomach a plate full of rice again. Which is what I had for dinner the night all this came down.
Long story short, I wound up in the hospital, AGAIN. Downside? They made me get on the scale, which I haven't done since my early disappointment on Engine 2. Upside? I met the deductible on my new health insurance so I can spend liberally at the dermatologist for the rest of the year. Also, had an ultrasound and X-rays of all my innards and my organs are 100 percent cool.
But I didn't feel well enough to run. I was really disappointed. J. sweetly pointed out that I have been training for a 5K, not necessarily this specific one; there will be another race soon.He also held my hair while I vomited in the bushes outside Winchester's nicest hotel. He's a good guy.
My sister decided to run it without me - she wanted the number and the t-shirt. Weirdly, on the morning of the race I decided I *had* to iron my hair; which made me ten minutes late to pick her up; which meant she didn't get a t-shirt or a number because they were all out by the time we got there. My bad.
Inspired by this post, I walked to the middle of the course to cheer on the participants.Just down from me was a group of cheerleaders from a nearby college. What a bunch of lazy b*tches. I'm sorry; but they stood there the whole time complaining; ignoring practically every runner that went by. Given that the race was to benefit Girls on the Run, half the runners were kids under 12, so that seemed especially b*tchy to me.
So...I cheered for the kids (and the adults) like I was on booster club steroids. It was interesting to see people's reactions. Since I was standing there all by myself, a one woman cheering section, a fair number of them looked at me like, "What the hell is wrong with you?"; many others smiled and waved and seemed really relieved someone was on their side.
Kari finished in 30 minutes; I believe it was a PR. Too bad she didn't get a number.
I was happy knowing that I'd lost 15 pounds (since August) on the Engine 2 Diet + running with Jeff Galloway. And happier knowing that I've enjoyed all of it. I could have starved myself, but I didn't. I never denied myself anything - I just made food that was a pleasure to eat and I made it Vegan. And then I pushed my body a little bit out of my comfort zone. That has been the best part.
